Ask a young child a simple question and you’ll often get a better one back: But why?It’s the most natural instinct in the world — and at Kedland International School, it’s the instinct we build our entire approach to learning around. We don’t just want our Stars to know what; we want them to understand why. That single idea shapes every lesson, every activity, and every classroom on our campus.

A different starting point

For a long time, early education in many places has meant one thing: recite, repeat, remember. Children memorise facts, chant them back, and move on — often without ever discovering what those facts mean or why they matter. We believe children deserve more than that.

At Kedland, we’ve made a deliberate shift away from rote, recital-based learning and toward inquiry-based learning — an approach that treats every child as a natural little researcher. Instead of simply handing over answers, we help children ask good questions, explore, test their ideas, and arrive at understanding for themselves. The result is a child who doesn’t just carry information around, but knows how to think — a curious, confident, open mind, ready for whatever the future holds.

This is what we mean when we say we focus on the WHY.

The early years: a British foundation

Learning at Kedland begins in the early years, and here we follow the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), part of the British National Curriculum. The EYFS sets the standards for the development, learning and care of children from birth to age five — making sure every child learns and grows well, and is kept healthy and safe along the way.

Its great aim is what educators call school readiness: giving children the broad base of knowledge, skills and confidence that becomes the right foundation for everything that follows — through school, and through life. But the EYFS is never about rushing little ones to grow up. In these years, play is learning. A child stacking blocks is exploring balance and number; a child in the home corner is building language and empathy; a child splashing paint is making sense of colour, cause and effect. We simply guide that play with purpose.

Seven windows on the world

The EYFS looks at a child’s growth through seven connected areas of learning. Together, they make sure our youngest Stars develop as whole children — in mind, body and heart:

• Communication and Language — rich opportunities to speak, listen and express themselves, through songs, stories and conversation.
• Physical Development — active, hands-on play that builds coordination and control, from running and climbing to holding a pencil.
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development — learning to share, take turns, understand feelings, and grow in confidence and kindness.
• Literacy — a love of books and stories, and the early skills of reading, writing and decoding sounds.
• Understanding the World — exploring people, places, nature and technology, and beginning to make sense of how the world works.
• Expressive Arts and Design — creating and imagining through art, music, movement and role-play.
• Mathematics — counting, recognising numbers, spotting patterns and shapes, and building early number confidence through play.

No single area stands alone. A morning of storytelling might grow language, spark imagination and quietly teach mathematics all at once — because that’s how young children genuinely learn: everything, all together, through doing. And at the close of the early years, each child completes an EYFS profile assessment — a warm, rounded picture of how they’ve grown and how ready they are for what’s next — before stepping into Key Stage 1.

Growing into Primary: the Cambridge curriculum

As our Stars move up into Primary, their learning steps up with them. In Primary 1 to 3, we follow the Cambridge curriculum — an international programme known and respected around the world, and one that shares our belief in curiosity and understanding over memorisation.

Cambridge learning is designed to prepare children for life, not just for the next test. It nurtures exactly what we love to see in a child: an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. Our lessons are educative, interactive, practical and meaningful — the kind of learning children can see, touch, and take home with them.

Across the primary years, our Stars grow through a rich range of subjects, each opening a new door:

• English builds the command of language that underpins everything else — reading, writing, speaking and listening with real confidence.
• Mathematics sharpens logical, analytical thinking, and helps children meet problems with courage rather than fear.
• Science turns children’s endless questions into discovery — observing, wondering, and understanding the world around them.
• Information and Communication Technology (ICT) guides them, step by step, through a world increasingly shaped by technology.
• Music brings joy, focus and togetherness, supported by our well-furnished music room and its instruments.
• Geography helps children make sense of the world, its people and its places.
• Arts and Design gives imagination room to run, from fine art to design.
• French opens a window onto another language and culture.
• History connects children to the human story — where we’ve come from, and how far we’ve travelled.

How we teach

A curriculum is only as good as the way it’s taught — and this is where Kedland’s classrooms truly come to life. We know no two children are the same, so we practise differentiated learning: planning lessons and activities that take each child’s individual needs, pace and interests into account. A lesson isn’t finished when it’s been delivered; it’s finished when every child has understood.

Our teachers are professional, passionate and endlessly creative, drawing on a variety of styles to keep learning inclusive, lively and well-rounded. And the spaces they teach in matter, too. Our classrooms are visually appealing, calm and age-appropriate, with pupil work-stations, art displays and activity centres — environments designed to invite curiosity and make every child feel that this is a place where they belong.

Where it all leads

Real learning shows itself not in how much a child can recite, but in the light in their eyes when something finally makes sense — and in the question they ask next. That’s what we watch for at Kedland, and it’s what tells us we’re getting it right.

From a baby’s very first discoveries in Daycare to a Primary 3 pupil solving a problem they couldn’t have imagined a year ago, every step is part of one journey — a journey that begins with a question and grows into a lifelong love of learning.

Because at Kedland, we don’t just teach children the answers. We teach them the WHY. And that, we believe, is where the future begins.
